What to Expect
Many new patients have questions regarding what to expect and how to prepare for their first visit. The following are some commonly asked questions with Dr. Jafari’s response:
How long is the first appointment?
Answer: For the first appointment patients should allow for two hours. We will discuss your health history, what brought you in for your first visit, treatment plan recommendations, and time permitting an initial treatment.
Can I eat or drink before my appointment?
Answer: Yes, please have a healthy meal and come well hydrated to your first appointment.
What should I wear to my first appointment?
Answer: If your first appointment is for acupuncture, loose-fitting sleeves and pants that can easily be folded up or down are best, however, patient gowns are available in the office if needed. New patient appointments for herbal medicine or clinical hypnotherapy have no special clothing requirements.
Are acupuncture needles painful?
Answer: A significant misconception regarding acupuncture needles is that they are the same as or similar in nature to a syringe — they are not. Many patients’ needle fears are allayed once they see an acupuncture needle in-person. Acupuncture needles are quite different in size compared to what most patients are accustomed to in a medical setting, for example, a typical syringe has a 2.9mm internal diameter whereas an acupuncture needle is usually 0.25mm or by comparison thinner than a couple of strands of hair. The vast majority of patients do not report having any pain and experience deep relaxation during and after treatment.
How can I prepare for a hypnotherapy session?
Answer: Prior to your first session, schedule a consultation to explore why you want to use hypnotherapy, provide details on what else you have tried that was ultimately unsuccessful, and be ready to discuss your questions and concerns with using hypnotherapy. Taking the time to do a consultation helps patients maximize their first session.
How many treatments will I need?
Answer: As with any treatment or medicine, everyone’s body responds differently. There are a number of factors to consider in answering this question that requires knowing details about the patient’s health history and lifestyle choices. Generally, with acupuncture, the cumulative effect of a course of regularly scheduled treatments have a positive benefit for patients over time. With hypnotherapy, again health history along with a number of evaluating factors help to determine the recommended treatment plan.
